This episode draw our attention on the challenge of keeping a very special marine ecosystem healthy. The guest, Beto Cuevas, comes with a question on his mind: what is the cause behind the massive death of more than 330 whales that happened in 2015 in the Chilean Patagonia fjords? The expedition includes navigation, snorkeling and trekking into the cold temperate jungle. These activities allow him to discover a very isolated region where a group of people realize investigations to better understand the ecosystem of the Melimoyu Natural Reserve and promote its protection. The episode takes us on a ride to meet the giants of the region: the whales, the salmon industry, the last Chilean settlers and standing at the center, the Melimoyu volcano. Every encounter contributes to our understanding of what make this place so unique!

Challenge: Protecting the glaciers

Expedition: D1 - Travelling from Green Baker Lodge, passing by Puerto Rio Tranquilo, getting around the Northern Icefield, crossing a river on a small boat, then on a bigger boat crossing the Fiordo Elefante, arrival at basecamp. D2 - 1st intent to get to the glacier. D3 - 2nd intent to get to the glacier and ice climbing. D4 - Navigation in front of the glacier's wall and return.

This is what adventure is all about: a dangerous trekking under constant rain to climb on a glacier. The San Rafael glacier is the perfect environment to witness climate changes because glaciers are the best indicators of the global warming. The glaciers are also at the center of the water war: if we choose to see them as a resource, what's at stake? What can be done? The worldwide situation is transposed to this highly significant region where nearly 30% of continental ice sheet concentrates.

Why shifting the dream of the world from one based on a rational economic perspective to one based on an ecological holistic life is crucial for our collective future? To answer this complex question, we will meet Kris McDivitt Tompkins, wife of late Doulgas Tompkins, who not only have very inspirational track record, but an incredible vision to share. Riding on a horse or trekking in the Chacabuco Valley, we live an intimate contact with her work, of protecting nature through the creation of national parks, the obstacles that rose along the years and mostly, her inner motivation to make their dream come true.

Expedition: D1 - Trekking in the Cochrane river's area. D2 - Snorkeling in the urban section of the same river. D3 - Kayaking in the Baker river. D4 - Trip to Coyhaique to see renewables energy initiatives.

This time, the expedition leads us to a fundamental issue in Chile: the water resources. The rights on water are mainly owned by foreign companies, and this is the only subject on which everyone agrees: it can not stay that way. The exploitation of rivers becomes the center of interest. We get more familiar with initiatives both on national and local scales. Most of the conversations will relate to the crucial role of water; not only for supplying of the big industries energy needs, but for the communities, for tourism and for the whole cycle of life on this planet.

Our guest is introduced to a project of the Patagonia of Aysen Foundation which is to bring the people of Villa Cerro Castillo together around an innovative ecotouristic project. In a small village surrounded by gorgeous mountains, the inhabitants are invited to become the guides, the hostal tenants, the cooks or drivers for the anticipated visitors. This story is one of empowerment. The encounters in this episode will give us an idea of the numerous obstacles that rise in the way of the visionary entrepreneurs. On the adventure side, it's nothing less than a highly emotional experience of ascending a magnificent mountain.

Challenge: Understanding the influence of climate change on the frontiers

Expedition: Biking to the Argentinian border, Extreme boat ride and trekking on a glacier

Thanks to a rare access to the Pyramid Glacier on the biggest continental ice sheet, this episode will push the endurance limits of the crew. The courageous caravan will face the ferocious elements getting to their destination. There, they witness the climate change impact on the glaciers, helping to better understand the actual shift our planet is going through. This episode is also the occasion to appreciate how Chile and Argentina overcome their past divergences by collaborating to preserve and promote this pristine area.
